Pursuing Justice For Accident Victims In Indiana

3 things every biker should know about motorcycle safety

Motorcycles are extremely popular these days, and because of the inherent risks involved with the hobby, more people than ever are getting hurt. If you're a biker who enjoys going for a weekend ride in Indiana, there are a few things you might want to know about motorcycle safety:

The risks are high

Motorcycling is far more dangerous than driving an automobile. Not only are motorcycles more difficult to maneuver and control in traffic, but because motorcyclists are not protected by a heavy steel frame, they're more likely to get seriously injured or die in a crash. In 2016 alone, 4,976 bikers died in the United States according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Using a helmet is the most important thing you can do

According to government statistics, motorcyclists who fail to wear a helmet have a 37 percent higher chance of dying in a crash.

Antilock braking systems (ABS) are also important

ABS systems on a motorcycle will prevent the biker from losing control in an emergency stopping situation. Fatal crashes happen 31 percent less for bikers who have ABS systems on their bikes.

Not all motorcycles are equal in terms of safety

Some motorcycles -- like supersport class bikes -- have a four times higher death rate than other types of bikes. Make sure that the motorcycle you buy has a reputation for safety and drive any kind of supersport or sport bike with care.

At our law firm, we are available to speak with any motorcyclist who has been injured in a crash. We help motorcyclists evaluate whether they have a viable claim for damages that they can pursue relating to their injuries.
