Make a claim quickly after a truck crash for compensation

After an accident you must make an insurance claim in the right manner. It’s one of the first things you need to do after you’re in a crash. The only thing that should really precede initiating this claim is seeking the medical care you may need following the collision.

Once you’re in a healthy enough state to file a claim, you should call your insurance carrier immediately. You should have the other party’s insurance information as well as his or her name.

If you do not, you can reach out to the police who were at the scene, since they should have copies of insurance information in the police report. If they don’t, they can still give you contact information for the other party. If you’re not in a state to do this work, your attorney can take over for you while you recover.

Depending on what happened, you may file a first- or third-party claim. If you file with your own insurer, it’s a first-party claim. A third-party claim is made with the other person’s insurance carrier. If you aren’t sure which to file, contact your insurance carrier, as the agent can get a hold of the other party’s insurance agent and work out who should handle the claim.

In the event that the other party doesn’t have insurance, it may be that you need to file a lawsuit against him or her. This lawsuit helps you obtain compensation directly from the person who struck you instead of going through an insurance company. Our site has more on what to do if you need to file a claim.
