Wrong-way driver causes fatal St. Joseph County car accident

Three people died on a recent Sunday night after a wrong-way driver crashed into a Chevy Tahoe along the Indiana Toll Road. According to police, two of the fatally injured victims were children.

The incident happened close to mile marker 83 a little before 7:30 p.m. According to Indiana troopers, they received calls that a black Toyota was traveling erratically in the area. Not long after police received the calls, the erratic car changed directions and started driving the wrong way down the highway. This caused a head-on collision with the Chevy Tahoe that contained the victims. The Tahoe flipped over onto its side and caught fire.

A 42-year-old female who was riding as a passenger in the Tahoe died at the scene. A 1-year-old passenger also died at the scene. A 12-year-old girl was rushed to the hospital, but she succumbed to her catastrophic injuries as well. The driver of the Tahoe suffered serious injuries, but survived.

The 32-year-old Toyota driver, who caused the accident, also survived, but suffered life-threatening injuries. Investigators claim that the alcohol likely played a role in this tragic collision. Another two vehicles, a Chevy Malibu and a Kenworth truck, were also caught up in the collision. The driver of the Malibu survived with non-life-threatening injuries and the driver of the truck did suffer any injuries.

Surviving close family members of the victims who die in drunk driving car accidents — and those who suffered serious injuries — in such crashes may want to investigate legal strategies for holding the at-fault drivers financially accountable for property damages and injuries.
