Indiana’s “Click It or Ticket” Campaign Aimed at Unbuckled Hoosiers
Attorney Matt Boulton has witnessed a number of Indiana car accidents in which a traumatic injury would have been avoided, or a life spared, if the person had been restrained by a seat belt.
In addition to Indiana’s year-round seat belt and child car seat laws, the Hoosier state is also known for putting emphasis on this safety requirement through the use of high-visibility patrols, and this spring, more than 200 Indiana police agencies will be enforcing a zero-tolerance policy as part of the national “Click It or Ticket” campaign.
The zero-tolerance policy means no exceptions will be made if you are pulled over for not wearing a seat belt. Simply put, if you, your passengers, or children are not properly restrained by a seat belt or child seat, respectively, you will be issued a citation and subject to a fine. Indiana law allows officers to stop vehicles for the single reason of a driver and/or passengers not wearing a seat belt, and while authorities will be conducting their seat belt patrols around the clock, enforcement will be especially stringent during the hours between midnight and 4 a.m., when it is reported that non-seat belt use occurs at a higher rate.
It should also be noted that common misconceptions about seat belt use have led some to believe that they are safer in a backseat or traveling in a larger truck or SUV if a crash occurs. This is completely untrue. Wearing a seat belt greatly improves your chances of avoiding serious injury during a collision, no matter the type or size of a vehicle.
