Slip-And-Fall Accidents

Slip-and-fall accidents remain a persistent problem in Indiana

Posted Oct 12, 2018 by Matt Boulton

We know you hear about it all time, but slip-and-fall accidents are more dangerous than many Indiana residents believe. As an example, we would like to remind you that actress Natasha Richardson died in 2009 after an outdoor slip-and-fall accident. Initially, she joked about her accident and seemed fine. What she did not realize was that she had suffered an epidural hematoma after striking her head in the fall. Ms. Richardson’s injury was purely accidental, but that is not always the case for fall victims.

Indoor slip-and-fall accidents can also be very dangerous. In fact, anytime the head suffers a blunt impact—a risk in any slip-and-fall accident—it could lead to severe injury or even death. In busy cities, like Indianapolis for example, people are coming and going in commercial establishments all the time. If no one is paying attention to the floor or walkway conditions, it could be a recipe for disaster.

Property owners have a duty to keep legal visitors, guests and customers safe from reasonable harm while on their premises. When they fail in this responsibility, an accident can happen, leaving victims with serious injury. Here are several examples of unsafe conditions for which property owners may be liable if an injurious fall occurs:

— Poorly maintained stairways and stairwells

— Wet floors with no caution signs

— Torn rugs or floor mats that pose tripping or slipping hazards

Of course, we know that some accidents are simply accidents; it is when negligence on the part of the property owner comes into play that injured victims can find a legal remedy.
