Stay safe and avoid drunk drivers during the holidays

Posted Oct 12, 2018 by Matt Boulton

The holiday period between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day is one of the most dangerous of the year for drivers. People are more likely to drive while drunk, and that makes them a risk to others on the roads. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has shown that the risk of being in an accident with drunk drivers increases significantly during the holidays.

During the Christmas and New Year’s Day holiday time period, the number of alcohol-impaired drivers increased by 34 percent.

Why does drunk driving increase so much? It’s much to do with gathering with family and friends. During the holidays, many people include alcohol in their get-togethers. They share wine while opening gifts, drink while waiting for the ball to drop on New Year’s Eve and generally have a good time at holiday events. Unfortunately, this increase in drinking leads to an increase in crashes as well.

Up to 40 percent of crashes reported between Christmas and New Year’s involve drunk drivers, according to a study, whereas crashes in day-to-day life are generally caused by drunk drivers in only around 12 percent of cases.

As someone who rides a motorcycle, it’s particularly important for you to know when drunk drivers are likely to be on the roads. They’re already less likely to expect you to be on the roads since you’re using a motorcycle in the cold. Make sure you attempt to avoid popular routes and prepare for dangerous drivers, so you can stay safe. Of course, never get on your motorcycle when you’re intoxicated, since you could cause a wreck.
