Indiana State Road 37 Car Accidents & Dangers

Posted May 04, 2019 by Matt Boulton

Indiana State Road 37 (SR 37) is a 110 mile long highway that essentially runs the length of our state, stretching as far north as Fort Wayne and zig-zagging north-south to Tell City on the border of Kentucky.

However, for most Indianapolis residents, SR 37 is a well-known route that connects northern traffic with the retail-heavy areas of Fishers, Noblesville, and Cicero in Hamilton County, while directing southern traffic through and around Bloomington and other rural areas of Monroe County.

Several high-profile car accidents on this highway have led the Boulton Law Group to take a closer look at local dangers and potential causes.

SR 37 Fishers & Noblesville car accidents

The number of SR 37 car accidents have increased over the years in Fishers and Noblesville as the area has grown with retail, office space, and a large number of new residences.

Several busy intersections along SR 37 in this area have also contributed to an increase in the number of accidents and collisions.

We used the ISP Crash Prediction Tool to view a high-risk crash area on SR 37 in Noblesville between the hours of 3pm to 6pm:

In addition to the more traditional highway dangers, a recent Hamilton County Reporter Letter to the Editor pointed out a lesser known danger involving tree trimming along SR 37 from Noblesville to Cicero.

The author of the letter points out that the incorrect tree pruning that occurred along SR 37 created “risk trees.” Essentially, risk trees have weak branches that are easily broken by high winds and storms. The fallen branches then fall into the roadway, increasing the risk of a serious car accident.

SR 37 Bloomington and Monroe County accidents

Anyone that has travelled the southern portions of SR 37 over the last several years has undoubtedly been confronted with several miles of heavy construction and congested traffic.

Again, the ISP Crash Prediction Tool maps an area of SR 37 in Bloomington that is especially dangerous during the hours of 3pm to 6pm:

In addition to the ongoing construction, there a number of major intersections that criss cross SR 37, IU student traffic, changes in elevation, and wildlife (deer) that have made the highway especially prone to serious car accidents.

Boulton Law Group has handled a number of SR 37 car accident cases that involved traumatic injuries and/or wrongful death.

State Road 37 traffic dangers

The most common dangers facing drivers on SR 37 include:

  • Construction
  • Traffic congestion
  • Speeding drivers
  • Distracted drivers
  • Intersection-related incidents
  • Deer and other animals
  • Bad weather

No matter the cause of a car accident on SR 37, victims should be aware of their rights. Depending on the severity of bodily injuries, property damage, and liability factors, victims may be entitled to compensation.

SR 37 car accident next steps

The first step after any car accident is to seek medical treatment.

Even if your injuries initially seem minor and do not require on-scene treatment or an ambulance, it is critical that you be checked out by a doctor. A number of seemingly minor car accident injuries can have delayed physical symptoms due to the masking effects of adrenaline. Waiting to see a doctor can damage a potential claim for compensation.

After you have sough treatment, we recommend that you avoid speaking to the insurance company until you consult with an experienced personal injury attorney.

Make no mistake, insurance companies are not on your side, even when it is your own carrier. They have a single goal: limit the amount of compensation they pay out to injured people.

For example, insurance adjusters routinely ask seemingly innocent questions that are designed to turn the facts of an accident in their insured’s favor. This can lead to a percentage or all fault being placed on you.

Insurance companies will also ask you for recorded statements and signed medical releases so that they can order your prior records and look for any pre-existing health conditions. They may then attempt to connect any prior injuries with those suffered in your car accident.
