Scarring: How scar tissue affects your muscles

Posted Oct 12, 2018 by Matt Boulton

When you get into an accident, one thing you have to worry about is scar tissue. Although your injuries may heal, the presence of scar tissue can complicate your recovery and lead to injuring yourself again.

The first 72 hours after an injury are vital. During that time, injuries need to be iced and compressed. They should be elevated. Most importantly, you should rest and try not to move or put pressure on the injury. When you rest and ice or compress the injury, there’s less likely to be excessive bleeding or swelling. Instead, the inflammation is controlled, allowing the area to heal more quickly.

Following an injury that leads to scar tissue, you should avoid stretching for 72 hours. After that, you can begin to gently move the area. If you attempt to do too much too soon, you’re likely to re-injure the site again, leading to more pain, swelling, bleeding and bruising.

Scar tissue is damaging because it reduces the strength and power of tissues. Muscles are strongest when they can fully extend and contract. With scar tissues, the muscles cannot fully extend or contract. For people with significant scars that impact their ability to move or flex a joint or area of the body, surgery may be used to remove the scarred area and allow it to heal again with appropriate treatment.

After a crash, it’s important to get the compensation you need to cover the potential for scar treatment. Every injury is different, so your settlement should reflect that and provide you with enough support to get the help you need.
