Common Causes of Loss-of-Control Accidents

Boulton Law Group is not speculating on the cause of this particular crash, as Martinsville officials are still working to gather all the facts, but attorney Matt Boulton has investigated past incidents with similar circumstances that involved one or more of the following factors:

Medical Emergency — A driver has suffered a sudden medical event, such as a seizure, heart attack, or loss of consciousness, leaving them unable to control the vehicle.

Distracted Driving — Taking eyes or attention off the road, even briefly, can have devastating consequences.

Mechanical Failure or Pedal Obstruction — A stuck accelerator pedal, whether due to a mechanical defect or an obstruction like a floor mat or improper footwear, such as flip-flops, can interfere with the ability to properly brake.

Pedal Confusion — Mistaking the accelerator for the brake is a more common error than many realize.

Impaired Driving — Alcohol or drug impairment significantly reduces a driver’s reaction time, judgment, and ability to maintain control of a vehicle, even in familiar areas.

Regardless of the cause, this latest Martinsville accident serves as an example that a vehicle accident can occur at anytime, even in the most unexpected of locations.
